What Is Doric?

What is Doric? Doric is the traditional dialect of the North East of Scotland, particularly associated with Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and the surrounding areas. It is part of the identity and character of the region, and it is the way I grew up hearing people speak.

If you’ve never heard Doric before, some of the words, expressions and sounds may be unfamiliar. To someone from outside the North East of Scotland, it can sometimes take a little getting used to.

For me, though, Doric is familiar. It is part of home.

Growing up in Aberdeen, I heard Doric in everyday conversations with family, friends and people in the community. It is woven into the way people communicate across the North East, and it is one of the things that connects me to where I grew up.

What Makes Doric Unique?

Doric has its own words, expressions, sounds and sayings that help give the dialect its character.

Some of those words can be wonderfully unique to the area, while others have roots that go back generations.

The way Doric sounds is also part of what makes it recognizable. To someone unfamiliar with the dialect, it may take a little time to become comfortable hearing it.

But for someone who grew up in Aberdeen and the surrounding area, those sounds can be instantly familiar.

That familiarity is important to me.

Doric isn’t something I learned from a book or discovered later in life. It is something I grew up hearing around me. It was part of everyday conversations with family, friends and people in the community.

That’s why talking about Doric is also, in a way, talking about home.

Doric and Growing Up in Aberdeen

I was born and raised in Aberdeen, Scotland, and Doric was part of the everyday environment I grew up in. I heard it in conversations with family and friends, and in the community around me.

Because of that, certain words and phrases can bring back memories of growing up in Aberdeen. Sometimes it can be a particular expression. Sometimes it can simply be the sound of someone speaking.

Those little details can take you straight back to a place and a time. That is one of the things I love about regional expressions and dialects. They can carry a sense of familiarity that goes beyond the words themselves.

For me, Doric is connected to those everyday experiences of growing up in the North East of Scotland. It is part of the character of the place I call home.

what is doric

More Than Just a Dialect

For me, Doric is more than just a dialect. It’s a connection to home. Growing up in Aberdeen, I heard it in everyday conversations with family, friends and people in the community. Certain words and phrases can take me straight back to my childhood.

There is something special about hearing a familiar expression when you are far away from where you grew up. A word or phrase that might seem completely ordinary to someone from Aberdeen can suddenly feel like a little reminder of home when you hear it somewhere else. That is part of what makes Doric meaningful to me. It is not just about how something is said. It is about the memories and sense of place that can come with it.

The Character of the North East

One of the things I love about Doric is that it reflects the character of the North East. Warm, direct, humorous and full of personality. Those are qualities that I associate with the region and with the way I experienced growing up there.

Doric has a personality of its own, and that personality is part of what makes it so enjoyable to share with people who may never have encountered it before. When you explain a Doric word or expression to someone who has never heard it, you aren’t just explaining a word.

You’re sharing a small piece of where you come from. That is what makes these expressions meaningful to me and why they fit naturally into what FLYKUP is about.

Why Share Doric?

At FLYKUP, we want to share those little pieces of North East Scottish culture with people who may never have encountered them before.

Doric is one of those pieces. If you didn’t grow up in Aberdeen or the surrounding areas, you may come across a word or expression that you’ve never heard before. And that’s okay. Part of the fun is learning what it means and discovering the character behind it. Sharing these expressions gives people another way to experience a little bit of the North East of Scotland. It’s not just about translating words. It’s about sharing the things that make a place feel like home.

Doric as a Connection to Home

But when you’re away from home, those familiar words and expressions can take on a different feeling. They can remind you of family. They can remind you of friends. They can remind you of conversations and everyday moments from growing up. For me, that connection is a big part of why Doric matters. It is one of those little pieces of Aberdeen that I carry with me. And through FLYKUP, I get to share some of those little pieces with people here in Virginia.

Sharing North East Scottish Culture

FLYKUP is about sharing those little pieces of North East Scottish culture with people who may never have encountered them before.

Sometimes that might be a Scottish product. Sometimes it might be an expression. Sometimes it might be explaining something that feels completely ordinary to me because I grew up with it. Doric is a perfect example. It is part of the language and character of the place I grew up, and sharing it gives people a small glimpse into the North East of Scotland. Because sometimes understanding Scotland isn’t just about knowing its history or seeing its castles.

Sometimes it’s about knowing the words people use when they sit down for a fly cup and a fancy piece. Those everyday details can tell their own story.

A Little Piece of Aberdeen

Doric is one of the things that connects me to Aberdeen and the North East of Scotland. It is familiar. It is full of personality. And it can bring back memories of home through something as simple as a word or phrase. That is what I want FLYKUP to help share.

Not just the Scotland people may already know, but some of the smaller, more personal pieces of North East Scottish culture that I grew up with. Doric is one of those pieces.

Doric is a connection to home.

It is something I grew up hearing in Aberdeen, in conversations with family, friends and people in the community.

And now, through FLYKUP, I get to share a little piece of that North East Scottish culture with people here in Virginia.

Because sometimes a little piece of Scotland can be found in the simplest things. A word. An expression. A familiar sound. Or even a wee chat over a fly cup and a fancy piece.
