A fly cup is a term from Aberdeen and the North East of Scotland. It isn’t a traditional Scottish expression used throughout Scotland. It is something I grew up with in Aberdeen.
A fly cup is simply taking a small break in your day for a cup of tea or coffee and a little something to eat.
You can enjoy a fly cup by yourself or with company. It might be a quick break when a friend drops by, a moment to sit and chat, or simply an excuse to step away from whatever you’re doing for a few minutes.
A fly cup often comes with a “fancy piece”—a little treat such as a biscuit, cake, shortbread, or something sweet.
For me, a fly cup represents something that feels very North East Scottish: slowing down, putting the kettle on, having a wee chat, and taking a moment for yourself.
It doesn’t need to be a special occasion. In fact, that’s the beauty of it.
A fly cup is permission to pause.
That simple tradition is where the name FLYKUP – Scottish Fancy Pieces comes from.
After being born and raised in Aberdeen, FLYKUP is my way of bringing a little piece of that North East Scottish culture to Virginia.
