If you’ve never heard the expression before, you might wonder what a “fly cup” actually is. The simplest way to explain it is this: a fly cup is taking a small break in your day for a cup of tea or coffee and a little something to eat.

It’s simple, informal, and doesn’t need to be a special occasion. It can be something you enjoy by yourself, or it can be a reason to sit down with someone else for a few minutes.

For me, a fly cup is one of those familiar little parts of growing up in Aberdeen that has always felt natural. It’s putting the kettle on, having a wee chat, and taking a moment to slow down.

What Does “Fly Cup” Mean?

A fly cup is simply a small break in your day for a cup of tea or coffee and a little something to eat.

You can enjoy a fly cup by yourself or with company. It might be a quick break when a friend drops by, a moment to sit and chat, or simply an excuse to step away from whatever you’re doing for a few minutes.

There’s no big occasion required.

You might put the kettle on, make yourself a cup of tea or coffee, grab something small to eat, and take a little time out of your day.

That’s really what a fly cup is about.

It isn’t complicated, formal, or something that needs to be planned well in advance. It can be as simple as taking a few minutes to sit down and enjoy a drink and something nice to eat.

A fly cup can also be a social moment. If a friend drops by, you might put the kettle on and have a wee chat over a cup of tea. It can be a chance to catch up, relax, and enjoy a little something together.

Or it can just be you.

Sometimes you simply need a few minutes away from whatever you’re doing. A fly cup gives you an excuse to pause, make a drink, and enjoy a little treat.

What Is a “Fancy Piece”?

A fly cup often comes with a “fancy piece”, a little treat such as a biscuit, cake, shortbread, or something sweet.

“Fancy piece” is another expression I grew up with in Aberdeen and the North East of Scotland. It’s simply something nice to have alongside your tea or coffee.

The fancy piece doesn’t have to be anything elaborate. It could be a biscuit, a piece of cake, some shortbread, or another little sweet treat.

That little something to eat is part of what makes a fly cup feel like more than simply grabbing a quick drink.

So, if someone offers you a fly cup, you might want to ask what’s on the menu for the fancy piece too.

For someone who didn’t grow up with these expressions, “fly cup” and “fancy piece” might sound a little unusual at first. For me, they’re simply familiar phrases from home.

What Does a Fly Cup Represent?

For me, a fly cup represents something that feels very North East Scottish: slowing down, putting the kettle on, having a wee chat, and taking a moment for yourself.

It doesn’t need to be a special occasion. In fact, that’s the beauty of it.

A fly cup is permission to pause.

It’s a small break from whatever else is going on in your day. You can sit down with a cup of tea or coffee, have a little something to eat, and take a few minutes for yourself.

It can also be about spending a little time with someone else. A friend drops by, the kettle goes on, and before you know it, you’re sitting down for a chat.

There’s something very familiar about that simple routine to me.

It’s one of those small, everyday things that can feel completely ordinary when you grow up with it, but becomes a little window into home when you’re explaining it to someone who has never heard the expression before.

That’s part of why I wanted the name FLYKUP to represent it.

Where Does the Name FLYKUP Come From?

That simple tradition is where the name FLYKUP – Scottish Fancy Pieces comes from.

After being born and raised in Aberdeen, FLYKUP is my way of bringing a little piece of that North East Scottish culture to Virginia.

The name is a nod to something familiar from home: putting the kettle on, having something sweet, and taking a little time to catch up.

For me, FLYKUP isn’t just a name. It connects back to something I grew up with and something that feels familiar to the North East of Scotland.

It’s about sharing those little pieces of Scotland that I know and love, from the expressions and traditions I grew up with to the products and stories that connect us to Scotland.

And sometimes, sharing a little piece of Scotland starts with simply explaining a phrase.
