A “fancy piece” is a term I grew up hearing in Aberdeen and the North East of Scotland. It refers to a little something to eat alongside your tea or coffee—perhaps a biscuit, a piece of cake, shortbread or another sweet treat.
The phrase is closely connected to the idea of a fly cup. You put the kettle on, make yourself—or someone else—a cup of tea or coffee, and find a little fancy piece to go with it.
But, just like a fly cup, it’s really about taking a moment.
A fancy piece doesn’t have to be elaborate or fancy at all. It can be something simple that makes your break a little more special.
You can enjoy one on your own, share one with a friend, or put something out when someone pops in for a chat.
Growing up in Aberdeen, this was just part of everyday life. We didn’t necessarily think about it as a “Scottish tradition”—it was simply what you did.
That’s what I love about the expression. It captures that very North East Scottish way of making an ordinary moment feel a little bit special.
A cup of tea. A little treat. A wee bit of time.
That’s a fly cup and a fancy piece.
