North East Scotland: What Makes It Different?

North East Scotland

Every part of Scotland has its own character, but Aberdeen culture and the traditions of the North East have a particularly strong sense of identity.

Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire have their own traditions, expressions, food, history, music and language; including Doric, the distinctive North East dialect I grew up with. While Scotland is one country, every region has its own way of doing things, and the North East is no exception.

So, what makes Aberdeen and the North East of Scotland different from the rest of Scotland?

What Makes North East Scotland Different?

The North East has a fascinating history that has shaped the region differently from other parts of Scotland. Aberdeen has historically been an important trading port, while the surrounding area has strong connections to farming, fishing, the sea and the granite industry.

These influences can still be seen throughout the region today. They have helped shape the communities, traditions and way of life that make Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire feel so distinct.

The North East isn’t defined by just one thing. It’s the combination of all these influences that gives the area its own identity.

A Language of Its Own

One of the things that makes the North East particularly special is Doric.

Doric is a form of Scots associated with the North East of Scotland, and it’s something I grew up hearing. The words and expressions can be very different from what you might hear in other parts of Scotland, and if you’re not familiar with them, some can take a little getting used to!

But Doric is more than simply a way of speaking. For many people from the North East, it’s connected to memories, family, community and home.

The language has a personality all its own, and it’s one of the things that immediately makes me think of Aberdeen.

Food and Traditions of North East Scotland

The differences aren’t just in the way people speak. They’re also found in the food, traditions and everyday customs that have been passed down through generations.

One of my favourite examples is the simple tradition of having a fly cup and a fancy piece.

If you’re from the North East, you may know exactly what I mean. If you’re not, you might be wondering what on earth a fancy piece is!

These little expressions and traditions are part of what makes the North East feel like home to me. They may seem small, but they’re often the things we remember most when we’re away.

Food, hospitality and sharing stories with one another are all part of that connection.

A Strong Connection to the Sea and the Land

The North East has also been shaped by its relationship with both the sea and the land.

Fishing and the sea have played an important role in communities throughout the region, while farming has long been connected to the surrounding countryside. Aberdeen itself has also been shaped by its history as a trading port.

Then there’s the granite.

Aberdeen is well known for its granite, which has become such a recognisable part of the city that Aberdeen is often known as the Granite City.

All of these things have helped shape the character of the North East. The city, countryside and coastline all come together to create something that feels distinctly different from other parts of Scotland.

A Personal Connection to Aberdeen

But what makes the North East especially meaningful to me is much more personal.

I was born and raised in Aberdeen.

These aren’t traditions I discovered later and decided to put on a shop shelf—they are things I grew up with.

The words, the food, the humour, the way people speak, the hospitality and those everyday little traditions—like having a fly cup and a fancy piece—are part of my own memories of home.

When you’re from somewhere, you don’t always realise how unique those little things are. They’re simply part of everyday life.

It’s often only when you leave that you begin to appreciate just how much they are connected to where you come from.

For me, Aberdeen will always be home, and the culture of the North East is a big part of that.

The Unique Character of North East Scotland

Scotland is often described through some of its most recognisable traditions and images, but there is so much more to the country than what you might see in a typical guidebook.

The North East has its own stories to tell.

It has its own words, humour, food, traditions, music and history. It has the people and communities who have carried those traditions forward and continue to make them part of everyday life.

That’s what I love about the North East.

It’s familiar to me because it’s home, but I also think there’s something really special about sharing those less familiar parts of Scotland with people who may not have experienced them before.
